Recommended Products for the GM 6.5TD
NOTE: for updated info see New Site at www.A1Customs.com

Here is what I recommend in the following order:

  1. PDC/PMD Remote Package: the PDC: Pump Driver Cooler and PMD / FSD Remote Harness  with a new PMD. For reliability , allows the pump mounted driver (PMD)  to be moved off the hot engine.
  2. Pyrometer and Boost Gauges : are recommended to monitor the engines fueling and turbo conditions, also very helpful in diagnosing some driveability problems.  Currently we do not stock gauges but plan to soon.
  3. Dash Mounted Adjustable Dash Mounted Adjustable Boost Controller adds a lot of power and can increase mpg. Best power for the dollar value I know of for the 6.5TD. We recommend the Fuel Control be used along with it.
  4.  Dash Mounted Adjustable FUEL Control allows fuel rate to be increased or decreased from stock setting. Recommended with Boost Control
  5. Hi-Flow Air Filter and Cleaning/Oiling Kit OR Performance Cool Air Intake allows engine to breathe better resulting in better performance and mpg. Works well with Boost Control and Performance exhaust system.
  6. Performance EXHAUST Systems which includes the Turbo Downpipe allows freer exhaust flow so the engine can breathe better, increases turbo response and lower exhaust gas temperature.
  7. Transmission Control 4L80E increases line pressure to reduce slippage and adjustment to delay  TCC lockup to decrease 'hunting'.
  8. WATER-Mist Injection recommended to reduce power losses from heat and high intake air temps (IATs).  In addition, alcohol can be added as a fuel for added power gains.
  9. PROPANE Injection a serious power adder, and helps the engine make power more efficiently and can result in mpg gains.

In addition to the above items, some areas require attention or have weaknesses resulting in problems and failures.

  1. Oil Cooler lines/hoses on these engines tend to leak especially at the crimp and have even been known to blow off, which can result in catastrophic engine damage. Even the OEM replacements tend to fail the same way.
  2. Headlight switch failures often occur because the switch is overloaded, our Headlight Light Switch Saver and Light Intensifier takes the bulk of the load off the headlight switch and also allow more voltage at the headlamps resulting in brighter lighting.
  3. The all too common oil pressure switch (OPS) failures are reduced if not eliminated by our Oil Pressure Switch Saver this product takes the bulk of the fuel lift pump load off the OPS.
  4. The ignition switches on these trucks can fail too from excess load often a problem that seems to be the transmission is really a bad ignition switch, resulting in the transmission going in to limp mode and failing to up shift from 2nd gear, or other odd transmission problems or error codes are often traced back to a weak or faulty ignition switch.  Our  Ignition Switch Saver removes the bulk of the power load off the ignition switch.
